Jessiman re-signed

The Rangers re-signed the 12th overall pick in the 2003 draft. Terms were not disclosed. The Rangers have been pretty dissappointed with Jessiman's progress throughout the years. In 166 career games with Hartford Jessiman has recorded only 32 goals and 42 assits totalling 74 points.
If Jessiman wants to play in the NHL, he is going to have to up his game, and have a hell of a training camp. Hopefully he can improve throughout training camp and throughout the coming season, and prove that he was worth 12th overaall pick. He was also chosen in front Dustin Brown, Zach Parise, Cory Perry, and Patrik Eaves, who have already proven themselves as good NHL players.

Opening Day in Prague

When they announced the games that the Rangers would play in Prague to open up the 2008-09 season, many people in Prague hurried to buy tickets. The tickets were sold out only hours after they went on sale. Most of the people who bought tickets to the games in Prague bought the tickets, because Jagr and Straka would be playing back where they were born. But now since both jagr and straka have left the Rangers many fans want refunds for their tickets.Even though Jagr and Straka left, it will still be a great opening 2 games in Prague as Michael Rozsival,Petr Prucha, and Tampa's Philip Kuba will return to their homeland.

Greg Moore

On Monday the Rangers signed restricted free agent Greg moore.Terms were not disclosed. Moore had 26 goals and 40 assists in 70 games last season with Hartford, and even earned a spot on the AHL All-Star team.Moore played in only 6 games for the rangers last season debuting on November 21 against Tampa Bay.

Moore was originally drafted by Calgary in the fifth round of the 2003 draft, and was acquired by the Rangers on a draft day trade in 2004.Moore is also a candidate to compete on the 4th line this year.

2008-09 schedule

The Rangers open up the seson in Prague with back to back games against Tampa on October 4th and 5th.Then they go up against the young and talented Chicago Blackhawks on October 10th,and then against division rivals Philadelphia Flyers on October 11.Here's the rest of the Rangers 2008-09 schedule.

KHL could be future problem for Rangers.

The KHL wants to keep their stars, and want to get back NHL Russian stars. They've already snatched Radulov from the Predators. They made huge offers to super star Evgeni Malkin. They have their eyes on Nikolai Zherdev, who becomes a restricted free agent after the 2008-09 season, which could end up hurting the Rangers. In the 2007 draft the Rangers drafted 17th overall in the first round. They were thrilled to get Alexei Cherepanov at 17,as they thought that he would have gone earlier.Rangers are starting to learn why he fell back so much. Before last season he made it clear that he wanted to play for the Rangers, but his actions show otherwise. Russia has been setting their eyes on him too. It would be a real shame if the Rangers lost him the russian league KHL.

Opening Day Roster

With all the crazy signings and trades the Rangers made this offseason, they will have a totally different look from last season. This, in my opinion, is what the Rangers opening day roster should look like.

Prucha-Gomez-Naslund
Dawes-Drury-Zherdev
Sjostrom-Dubinsky-Callahan
Orr-Fritsche-Rismiller

Roster

Even though the Rangers lost Jagr,Straka,Avery, and probably won't resign Shannahan, they still have a better team than the one that had Marian Hossa end their season a few months ago. They started the free agency by signing All-Star Wade Redden. And even though he may be overpaid,he still is a big upgrade to one of the worst powerplays in the league. On July 3 they said goodbye to Jagr by signing five time All-Star and former canucks captain Markus Naslund. This could prove to be a great move by the Rangers, because Jagr had one of the worst seasons he's ever had, while Naslund had 25 goals playing with centers who don't have half the talent that Scott Gomez and Chris Drury do.Playing with Gomez or Drury,Naslund should have a gauranteed 25+ goal season. The Rangers also signed Kalinin, which in my opinion was a good signing. He and Mara would be a pretty good third line pairing. The Rangers also acquired young and enigmatic forward,Nikolai Zherdev along with Dan Fritsche in trade that sent Fedor Tyutin and Christain Backman to Columbus in return.Zherdev was second on the Jackets in goals(26),points(61),and led the team in assists(35).The 35 assists and 61 points were career highs. His career high in goals is 27 which he set in the 05-06 season.Dan Fritsche had 10 goals and 12 assists in 69 games last season. The Rangers also traded away Hollweg to Toronto for a 2009 5th round pick. The Rangers also signed Aaron Voros and Patrick Rismiller earlier this offseason.Even though it seemed like Sather would give us a horrible offseason when he didn't want to re- sign Sean Avery, and gave Redden a 6 year-39 million contract after a pretty bad season, everything turned out good, and the expectations for this team are higher than ever. It's gonna be a great season.

Questions

Their annual free agency frenzy over, the Rangers are pretty well set from a roster perspective with their season-opening pair of games against Tampa Bay in Prague now less than three months away.
However, a couple of questions remain—one great and one small.
The small one: Who will be the seventh defenseman? While Thomas Pock’s name might be the most recognizable among the candidates, his salary and the requirement that he pass through waivers to go to or from the minors makes him the least likely to get the job. So figure instead on a rotation of youngsters such as Bobby Sanguinetti, Corey Potter and Michael Sauer. The great one: Will the Rangers re-sign Brendan Shanahan?
In the immediate aftermath of the big-ticket signings of Wade Redden($6.5 million per season) and Markus Naslund ($4 million per) and with the re-signing of Michal Rozsival at $5 million per, the Rangers figured to be right up against the salary cap. But subsequent deals for wingers Nigel Dawes and
Fredrik Sjostrom came in a bit lower than expected, clearing approximately 1 million.
Throw in the fact that some winger who makes approximately $1 million would have to be lopped off the roster to make room for Shanahan, and the Rangers probably could afford the modest price the 39-year-old is seeking from the only team he has considered playing for in 2008-09.
But while Rangers GM Glen Sather continues to say that the door remains open to a Shanahan return, he has yet to make a move to re-sign the future Hall of Famer. And with every day that passes without such a move, it becomes increasingly clear that the Rangers don’t have Shanahan in their plans for this season. And even if the Rangers don't clear enough cap space for Shanahan, you have to be pretty excited on the future.

Paul Mara

The New York Rangers have re-signed veteran defenseman Paul Mara to a $1.95-million, one-year deal.
The 28-year-old was an unrestricted free agent. He had 17 points (1-16) and 52 penalty minutes in 61 games with the Rangers last season. The six-foot-four, 212-pound Mara has 218 points (58-160) and 546 penalty minutes in 563 career NHL games. This was a pretty good signing by the Rangers as it gives them more options to work with and Mara was a solid defenseman last season.

Vladmir Denisov

On July 10 the Rangers signed Vladmir Denisov. The terms were not disclosed. This could help the Rangers, because Denisov is a physical defenseman, which is something the Rangers are lacking. The 24-year-old Denisov recently completed his first season in North America, splitting the campaign between Lake Erie of the American Hockey League and Johnstown of the ECHL. He recorded two goals, eight points and 111 penalty minutes in 66 games with the Monsters and added two assists and 26 penalty minutes in five contests with the Chiefs.
A native of Belarus, the 5-11, 207-pound Denisov spent 2006-07 with Lada Togliatti of the Russian Super League, registering three assists and 76 penalty minutes in 39 games.
